Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to provide preservice teachers instruction on how to use computers and technology in the K-12 classroom. Students taking this course will be expected to develop proficiency in the following environments: word processing, spreadsheets, drawing/graphics, PowerPoint presentations, SmartBoard, ideas for incorporating social media into the classroom, web page design, iPhoto and iMovies. All assignments and activities will utilize these environments to develop and use technology to enhance student learning and increase teacher effectiveness: classroom newsletters, classroom design layouts, grade reporting, portfolio design, multimedia Presentations, learning activity development using WebQuests and SmartBoards, Internet communication and research and the use of scanners and digital still and video cameras.
Students will be expected to utilize the skills gained in this course throughout the remainder of their educational program at EMU. Students will show evidence of their ability to utilize technology in the development of their Portfolio. Successful completion of this course allows students to meet Virginia Technology Standards for School Personnel.

Using Comic Life software and Photo Booth, create a 3-5 frame comic to introduce yourself and the content area you are interested in teaching to others. DUE: Tuesday, January 18, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.
2. Newsletter***.............................................................................................................. 10 points
Using word processing and graphic design skills the student will create a classroom newsletter in Microsoft Word designed to give to their students to take home to their caregiver(s) on the first day of school. During class, the Caregiver Communication rubric will be used to evaluate your newsletter. Please save this newsletter to place in your Teacher Education Admission Portfolio. DUE: First Draft due Tuesday, January 25 (bring hard copy to class); Final Draft due Tuesday, February 1, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of presentation format utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint to present a topic to K-12 students. DUE: Tuesday, February 8, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.
4. Classroom Layout........................................................................................................ 10 points
Use graphic design and word processing skills to design a classroom layout in SmartBoard and identify why you have chosen to structure your classroom to reflect best practices. DUE: Tuesday, February 22, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.
5. iPhoto Slide Show........................................................................................................... 5 points
Develop a iPhoto slide show using at least 10 pictures taken and downloaded from a digital camera. DUE: Tuesday, March 1, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.

Using Microsoft Word collaborate with a colleague to develop a WebQuest / virtual field trip activity for a specific VA SOL to be used in your classroom. DUE: Tuesday March 22, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.
9. Spreadsheet/Gradebook/Mail Merge........................................................................ 15 points
Using spreadsheet skills the student will compile a class roster of "essential information" of student records and construct an electronic grade book to sort data and assign grades using Excel Spreadsheet and send a letter to Caregivers using Mail Merge. DUE: Tuesday, April 5, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.

Find three podcasts or short educational videos that would be appropriate developmentally for your students, related to your content area. On your class website under a page created specifically for podcasts, post a link to each podcast, and beneath each link, write a short description of the content, where the podcast came from, and three discussion questions for each podcast, posed to your students. The discussion questions should be open-ended, rather than only factual, with application to everyday life. DUE: Tuesday, April 5, 2011 by 8:15 p.m.
